Greetings good citizen, while most of you are unaware of this we operate on the decidedly faulty premise that the 'good of the individual' benefits us all. Just take a look at the number of species we've added to the extinct list because one of us decided to pursue their individual 'best interests'.
But most of us don't care very much if the animal kingdom suffers. Sure we will rally behind the puppies and kitties [but the skunks and the aardvarks are on their own!]
Then there are the instances where, through greed or carelessness, an invasive species was introduced and it caused untold damage to the habitat because nobody questioned the wisdom of the, er, 'well-intentioned'.
Gypsy moths, anyone?
Understand, I'm no tree hugger. I'm also a member of PETA [People Eating Tasty Animals] but it is precisely this variety of I don't care that is driving our civilization off the cliff.
We can't 'husband' the resources that remain if we continue to stand idle while 'self-interest' squanders what's left.
Worse, it's not just the wasting of what we all need but it's the careless disposal of the byproducts [like in Flint] that make this 'self-interest manifest dynasty' a suicidal act from a species preservation point of view.
If you think this through to its logical conclusion it means we need a global government to enforce a global body of laws to protect what remains...(because we aren't going to be 'swimming' in an ocean of fossil fuel for much longer.)
And the current, er, mindset exists to protect those who claim ownership of that which belongs to us all.
Case in point, good citizen, You've been channeling your inner Gordon Gecko for what, 40 years now? Has 'Greed is good' benefitted you personally?
Nope.
And the capitalist's response to this is two-fold; A, you're not doing it right and B, you don't 'believe' hard enough!
[with the common thread being the problem lies with YOU!]
On the rarest of instances you might find a capitalist willing to concede that under capitalism there are only a handful of winners and the rest are losers.
Which is the truth but people don't like the truth. They'd prefer to think they failed than to admit they were too cowardly to stand up for their fair share.
How ironic the 'go along to get along' mindset is precisely the formula that is going to seal our fate?
The capitalist, following their 'best interests' discovered that people are expensive so they automated whenever possible, never once considering their robots DON'T BUY THEIR PRODUCTS AND NEITHER DO THE DESTITUTE! but unemployment is somebody else's problem...(usually yours.)
And if your boss doesn't pay you enough to live on, guess who's problem that is? Yup, not his but YOURS!
This is what comes from bowing to self-interest and foolishly believeing that their 'best interests' are good for you too. By that line of logic, slavery makes sense.
The slaver gets to sell you, how nice for him!
He doesn't care that things aren't going to work out too well for you, he gets paid and washes his hands of the matter.
With that said I am playing to the part of you that probably thinks extinction [of the human race] wouldn't be such a bad thing but we both know the whole edifice is built upon a few 'bad apples'.
Most people are nice...actually too nice which is why the relative handful of jerks keeps succeeding.
And I choose this conundrum to take my leave, thanking you once again for letting me inside your head!
Until next time,
Gegner
