Greetings good citizen, one of the more disturbing factors regarding now long ago written books is their suggestion that governments lie to the people.
In Orwell's '1984' CGI was used extensively to fabricate news reports. Not to go all chicken little on you but there is much that happens in this world that doesn't make the news cycle at all while other items make you wonder how the heck did this make the national news?
Since Orwell's book was published in 1949, he was probably was referring to 'photo-editing' as computers were still on the drawing board back then.
Yet despite that he incorporated the concept that the media could (and probably does) use CGI to, er, 'mislead' the public.
While some believe man's visit to our nearest neighbor was 'fabricated', I can't think of (or point to) a specific incident where the media might be guilty of using CGI to 'mislead' the public.
Yet they do it* all the time. [* The 'it' in this case being deceive the more than a little gullible public.]
Yes good citizen, lying with pictures is more convincing but lying with words still does the trick!
Everybody knows the 'statistics' they use to measure the economy are badly 'massaged' and show a 'picture' that has no basis in reality. The staggering numbers of homeless and widespread food pantrys speak loudly of our badly mismanaged economy.
All so a few can be rich.
Anyway, the reason I bring up the, er, breakthough in CGI is to raise awareness that it is possible to use CGI to mold public perception.
In the plot of 1984 the three main land masses were in a perpetual state of war, which for many spelled privation. You had to 'sacrifice' for the war effort. You accepted a lower standard of living while resources were funneled towards defeating the enemy.
And in Orwell's novel the war footage was 'photo-shopped'. No real battles took place.
We, on the other hand, are engaged in a perpetual war against an idea. This (amazingly enough) requires no privation, in fact the consumer is flat on his back for a different reason, insufficient income.
Yes good citizen, we are currently engaged in a very different kind of war, a war intended to prevent a recurrance of the Terror, with it's official name shortened to the Global War on Terror.
That doesn't change the fact that the combatants are 'the Haves and the Have more's' vs. the rest of us.
With the Global 'race to the bottom' reaching its foregone conclusion [the pauperization of the mythical 'middle-class'] it is useful to control the public's perception that the enemy is 'uncompetitive unionism' than the true threat which is global monopolism!
The 'marketplace has always been 'global', globalization was merely the fatcat's slugging it out for 'market share'.
Superior products be damned. If you had deeper pockets you cut price until the competition 'disappeared'. Tyranny of the marketplace? You bet it is!
Nobody hates competition more than a capitalist...they hate it almost as much as they hate being exposed for the self-interested, ungrateful morons they are!
Perhaps more thought-provoking is how we have been in a perpetual 'state of war' since WWII, which should make you wonder what our 'betters' are playing at?
Without peace there can be no prosperity but it seems the self-interested aren't concerned with YOUR prosperity. Many of them make their money from 'the war effort'.
Just another thing to ponder while your sitting there on break, watching all your co-workers staring at their smartphones in silence.
How will things change if nobody will discuss what's wrong?
Short answer: They won't.
Worse, it's hard enough to get a dialog going but when nobody talks it's really hard to get them to listen.
That's why you'll find me here, barking like a dog left out on his leash too long.
Barking mad mayhaps but it's all we have.
Thanks for letting me inside your head,
Gegner
