Greetings good citizen, before there was Labor Day there was May Day. We no longer celebrate, never mind remember that today is the traditional day set aside to celebrate those who get their backsides out of bed and bring the rest of us 'the world as we know it.'
Ironically May Day (or any other day that celebrates the worker) is extremely unpopular with capitalists although I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed that 'President's Day' has suffered a degree of, er, 'slippage', meaning CEO's across the capitalist spectrum have adopted it to celebrate their own 'position of authority' rather than the founder's birthday it was originally established to commemorate.
No irony should be lost on the fact that the holiday was first combined and then shifted from the actual day to one of the few remaining 'floaters' on the capitalist calendar. For a while it disappeared altogether but after 'Morning in America' it re-appeared in it's current incarnation as the unofficial day to celebrate 'CEO-dom!'
So what does that have to do with May Day? (Known elsewhere as Labor Day.)
Well, after ignoring May Day off the calendar somebody noticed that the capitalist calendar was devoid of any day commemorating the contribution of it's greatest asset, the customer!, Er, no...Christmas celebrates that...but there wasn't a day to celebrate the worker until the Unions forced the creation of the current 'end of summer cookout' because NOBODY celebrates the worker's contribution to society...not even the worker.
And why should they?
Subtracted from the equation is what the individual would have to do if we didn't utilized the 'separation of labor' to elevate the lifestyle/living standards of ALL humans...because 'the good life' has ALWAYS been just beyond the reach of the 'average worker.
They could grab a piece of it...but in order to do so certain sacrifices had to be made. You could drive a nice car but it usually meant you lived in a dump or dressed like a hobo (and smelled like one too!)
See, nothing to 'celebrate' here, move along [or we'll frisk you and give you something serious to worry about.]
Yes, good citizen, since 'Morning in America' and the busting of the (corrupt) Union movement labor has become something to be ashamed of.
So ashamed that it slipped completely from the social lexicon, merged by the pundits into the 'middle class', the new name for 'loser' in our new society.
Remember good citizen, it was 'Bush the Lesser' that said on national television that his 'constituency' was the 'Haves and the Have more's'...which leaves you where?
Exactly nowhere. It pays to remember that NOBODY has YOUR back!
I'll conclude today's 'reality check' with the admonition to reflect and be thankful for those who get their butts out of their warm beds (well, SOME OF THEM are warm!) and go do what they're paid to do making it unnecessary for you to get up, chase down and kill your next meal with a stick.
In this respect, there is still something to celebrate...but likely not for long.
Thanks for letting me inside your head,
Gegner
