Greetings good citizen, there used to be a lot of talk coming from the 'evangelical' [if you're not like me I'm going to convince you to BE like me...whether you like it or not!] side of the political spectrum [more commonly known as Republicans...] about a chimera, a non-existent phantom they called their 'moral compass'.
While it is widely agreed that all [and by that I mean 'most'] humans are born knowing the 'basic difference' between right & wrong.
Sadly this belief stands in defiance of the fact that we are HIGHLY 'imitative' creatures that tend to 'learn' most of our values through 'observation'.
Our modern society stands as a damning example of our culture and its general 'sucks being them' attitude.
As far as 'moral compasses' go, actions most definitely speak louder than words.
We have always lived in a 'Do unto others then split' sort of world. [Sorry for the dated vernacular there, twas common when I was a lad...oh so many moons ago.]
We gave lip service to the idea of treating others as we would have them treat us while interpreting that philosophy as really meaning 'screw 'em all and the dumb ones twice!'
It's a hard lesson, one that has made us all suspicious of 'ethical treatment' whenever we encounter it. Usually if some one/organization 'initially' treats you ethically, it usually means the big screw is coming, 'baked in' to whatever you were negotiating for.
Yeah, I'll repeat for those of you that may have missed it yesterday, my worst nightmare is finally dying only to be reborn into this same existence.
Isn't there a song that tells us 'Hard to believe you need a place called Hell'?
It all starts with our 'obsession' with owning things and proceeds to a psychotic way of 'measuring loyalty' (like others owe it to you just for your sharing this plane of existence with them...)
[Have I 'justified' Hell yet?]
But wait, I get ahead of myself!
NONE [and again I mean MOST of us] don't sit our kids down and tell/teach them to 'watch their backsides' ALWAYS because life has already taught them this before they get 'blindsided' by their creepy little so-called friend, that they trusted NOT to throw them under the bus.
Which is to belabor the obvious...the Monsters that surround us, they aren't BORN, we MAKE them!
Re-enforce 'loyalty' to hard and you'll turn a child into a serial killer because everyone they meet isn't loyal to the degree they expect from others...and what do you do to 'disloyal' people?
Why else would a little psychopath go against the one thing we ALL [and, again I mean MOST of us] manage to teach our kids, the prohibition against killing.
Funny how it only works in some of us, eh?
Makes you wonder what those who kill without compunction witnessed to make them like that?
Not that you have to see someone 'killed' to become a killer. Usually our minds can convince ourselves that killing others is justified...and we all know we suppress the urge to murder dozens with our bare hands every morning on the way to work!
What's that, you don't think how we drive is a true reflection of how we feel towards others?
Tsk, tsk good citizen, here have another cup of Kool-Aid while we take another swing at this 'de-humanizing' puzzle.
Because, er, 'discourtesy' isn't confined to just the roads, it's EVERYWHERE people are forced to que up. [stand in line/stay in lane and wait their turn.]
Cutting in front of someone that has been waiting is a genuinely risky thing to do but in this we circle back to notion, 'is getting killed really a 'bad thing'?'. If you ponder that for more than a minute the pluses start to pop up...unsurprisingly, there are far more upsides to ending this torture early than the opposite.
Downside number one is 'you won't be there to protect your 'loved ones'...counter that with, this ASSUMES you'd have been able to do something/anything regardless!
Like time travel, turning the hand of fate is only possible if you are given a choice...MOST of the time, *the choice is made for you.
[*Substitute the words 'etched in stone' if you're still having trouble making the distinction.]
Most of us wrestle with this 'moral cesspool' every waking moment of our 'not brief enough' existence...and in the end wonder if any of us learned ANYTHING from all of the grief we suffered.
Well, if you find yourself here again the answer is NO.
But that's a bridge to be burned some other time...such a 'time' is.
It's a crackerjack training ground if the object is to teach us 'self-loathing' but somehow I don't think that's the point [although it doesn't 'tax the imagination' to believe that some DO subscribe to that belief!]
I apologize for waiting until the end of the post to notify you that like Spirit in the Sky, I don't personally believe there is any such thing as a Bureau of Standards & Ethics...and if there were it would likely be staffed with posers and appointees, just like here!
Morbid as it may seem, your 'choices' such as they are is 'off yourself' or do battle with the forces of 'evil' [a.k.a. as the 'freakishly greedy' and their henchmen, the Blue Line.]
Understand, 'A' cannot exist without 'B!'
I'll go you one better, good citizen, only some of the blue enter 'the force' ignorant of their true purpose, the rest do what the do WILLINGLY, which is the source of 'true evil!'
Did you hear that?
If there really is a sound associated with 'the crack of doom' it would sound a lot like that but this one came from inside YOUR head!
So we'd better give it a rest before the whole shebang blows!
Um, take it easy and try not to think so much [I know the boss doesn't pay you to think and the media believes your incapable...which leaves you where?]
Later,
Gegner
